Towndoor Limited was founded in 1988 by Stuart and Lucy Bamforth.
The Bamforth Group’s dismantling division was first invited to Meltham in Huddersfield to remove the assembly plant within Meltham Mills for J I Case Limited.
This was to be the start of a unique relationship between the Case Corporation and The Bamforth Group.
Whilst the dismantling division continued to remove plant equipment, Case Tractors were looking to dispose of parts of the factory. This was a delicate operation as Case had employed some 4,000 men at the Meltham Mills plant and wished to maintain as many jobs as possible.
50% of the factory was sold to the Bamforth Group in the name of Towndoor Limited and within 4 years the whole of this huge site had been developed into an Industrial Estate which was fully occupied by 38 individual Companies providing 400 plus new jobs.
With all industrial units and workspaces fully occupied, there was a need for further property rental premises and therefore a second site in Netherton, near Huddersfield, was purchased from Allied Brewers and renamed as Crosland Road Industrial Estate. This site was quickly renovated and fully let to 9 local companies.
A third site became available in 1993 (owned again by the Case Corporation) known as S Block and a deal was agreed for Towndoor to purchase the site from Case.
In March 1999, Towndoor purchased an area of land located at the end of Bent Ley Road in Meltham. The land, formerly owned by Wells and Moorhouse, had been used as a storage and scrap yard for many years. This area of land was also once owned by J I Case and used as a tyre storage facility. This vast area of land is roughly four acres in total and Towndoor proceeded to submit planning for 4 new build units that were to be constructed over the course of 9 years. Now known as Bent Ley Industrial Estate, the site was completed in 2008 and is now fully let.
In 2012 following the sad passing away of Stuart Bamforth and Lucy Bamforth’s decision to semi retire, their son, Dan Bamforth, became Towndoor’s Managing Director with the vision of driving the family business into the 21st century.
2013 marked the company’s 25th anniversary. To celebrate and in line with demand for small commercial rental units, Towndoor purchased its first Leeds property known as Leathley House. The detached property in Leeds city centre is located just off the M621 and is split into 6 starter business rental properties. The site was fully let upon completion of the refurbishment work.
A further Leeds industrial unit was purchased during 2014 in the form of Beza Court in Hunslet and this is located on the outskirts of Leeds city centre.
Towndoor has continually developed and enhanced its core commercial property rental portfolio in Huddersfield and Leeds, whilst developing new build industrial premises and sites across West Yorkshire for re-sale. The company plan to acquire further industrial property outside of the local area and develop additional commercial and residential units on various parcels of land already owned.
In 2015, Towndoor purchased an old spinning mill in Lockwood and are currently renovating the site into a brand new A Grade property called The Dyeworks. It will feature 8 units with the very latest technology throughout the site. The company has also bought a site on the outskirts of Huddersfield in Armitage Bridge called Big Valley. These developments have expanded the portfolio of properties to over 100 units at 9 sites.
