7 years on from their establishment, Pymroyd Services are stronger than ever having recently taken on even MORE space with us! We’re delighted to have Pymroyd Services as part of our portfolio and look forward to many more years of success!
When we reached out to Director, Leanne Field, about their success over the years, here is what she had to say:
“When Craig from Towndoor asked us to write about our success story I definitely shied away from it. This is quite a big thing for me to do as I feel like I am basically bragging and it’s just not me! But when I actually sat and thought about how far we have come and how much we achieved in the last seven years I thought let’s do it, we should be proud of ourselves! So as difficult as it is going to be, here goes…
Back in 2016 myself, John, and another Director were effectively sacked on the spot by our previous employer, which is when Pymroyd was born! NOTE – we won the tribunal!
So having been left without any income whatsoever and 3 young children to feed we wondered what on earth we were going to do. John came from a background in textiles (a dying trade) and I had been a full time mum since university, so neither of us had any real experience of trying to find a job, but we did know how to run a business having been the face of our previous employers for nearly 10 years, so we decided to go for it and set up on our own along with Mick (the other Director who was also sacked).
10th June 2016
The day of the sacking. Sent home with no further pay at all, so we decided we could make it on our own instead. We took on our first regular contract in the first week. A £50 per visit monthly job – we were over the moon!
27th June 2016
Pymroyd was officially born and registered with Companies House.
Over the next few months, we borrowed money off family to be able to pay our solicitors fees, our mortgage/bills, and paid for food/other essentials on a credit card. I got a job in a secondary school in the Student Services department to boost our income (whilst working on Pymroyd at every other spare moment I had). John and Mick continued to seek out new customers and contracts. Our wonderful friend Ian lent us £3,000 to be able to buy a van and some equipment to be able to do the basics. For this I will be eternally grateful! He believed in us right from the beginning (we have since paid him back by the way).
John and Mick had one sign written t-shirt each that they had to keep washing every day until we could afford to buy any more. Over the next couple of years, they continued to buy more equipment, and my dad even built a shed at our home for them to be able to store it all! I continued to do all the admin on an evening and weekend, also helping out cleaning etc during the school holidays. John and Mick became increasingly busy due to their hard work and dedication, and this enabled us to take on a couple more people. We soon outgrew our shed so took the plunge and rented Unit D7 from Towndoor to store all our equipment.
July 2019
By this point, we were getting to a stage where I was falling behind with all the admin and invoicing, so I took the plunge, left the school, and came on board full-time. Someone needed to be there to organise the men!
November 2019
John and Mick decided to part company as it became apparent they wanted different things in life. John was ready to ramp it up and expand Pymroyd, whereas Mick wanted more of a quiet life (he is 10 years older than John). At this point John and I bought Mick out and became the two remaining Directors of the business. Mick has remained a good friend of ours and we still call on him now when we need an extra pair of hands!
July 2020
I literally could not keep up with office demands at this point, so we took on two new admin assistants and even set up desks in our living room at home! Having outgrown Unit D7, we made the decision to up-size and move into Units D1-D2 at Meltham Mills! We stayed in the living room until these were ready for us to move into in the September.
September 2020
We got the keys for D1-D2, moved out of D7 and out of my living room - I finally got my house back! The premises felt HUGE, however, it didn’t take long for us to fill it!
June 2023
Things continued to grow and expand to a point where we started running out of room again! We got wind that our next door neighbour was moving out, so we jumped at the chance to take on Unit D3 as well! Meltham Mills Industrial Estate is a fabulous place to be based and we have lots of lovely neighbours too.
We started with literally nothing from our living room and garden shed. Through shear hard work and determination, we have continued to grow and evolve to where we are today; A Facilities Maintenance company covering the North of England.
We now have 14 vans and 19 team members, not to mention a lot more grey hairs!!
There have been some hugely difficult times over the years and will continue to be in the years to come I’m sure, but there have also been some massively rewarding times too. We have been fortunate enough to be able to sponsor local running events and provide donations to various other charity events along the way. This all makes it worthwhile knowing we are giving something back, as did people when we needed them. I just want to thank those of you who have stood by us and supported us in holding it together. Friends, colleagues, and customers alike.
I never want anyone to ever feel like we were made to feel or experience what we went through, and I hope that shines through in the way we support and lead our team, because without them, we wouldn’t be where we are today! You spend a lot of your life at work, so it needs to be as nice a place as it can be.
As Winston Churchill once said – “Never let a good crisis go to waste”. We definitely didn’t and looking back now, it is the best thing that ever happened to us. We were living in the comfort zone and would never have taken such a leap if we hadn’t been forced into the situation, so my advice to anyone is just do it and if you want something enough you can make it work!
Run your own business they say, come and go as you please they say……Hmm, not quite how it works, but so glad to be in such a privileged position all the same. Now when can I retire?!"
We love to hear our tenants success stories and how they have grown since being with us. Pymroyd Services are a great example of how we look to support clients with their commercial property needs as their business' develop over time.
