What is ‘Photovoltaic Technology’ and how does it work?
Here comes the scientific part; ‘Photovoltaic technology’ is the terminology used to describe the individual bits of hardware that convert solar energy into power, generating electricity from sunlight, photo meaning light and voltaic meaning electricity. At the heart of photovoltaic (PV) technology is a semi-conductor material that can be adapted to release electrons, the negatively charged particles that form the basis of electricity. The most common semi-conductor material used in photovoltaic cells is silicon, an element that is found mostly in sand. There is no limitation to its availability as a raw material, being the second most abundant material in the earth’s mass.
The greater the intensity of the light, the greater the flow of electricity. A photovoltaic system does not need bright sunlight to operate, it can also generate electricity on cloudy days.
PV technology has been advancing rapidly in recent years due to continued investment and interest in the sector, which has led to better quality technology for lower prices. Photovoltaic technology is the perfect way to generate cleaner energy in both domestic and commercial environments.
So, how are we at Towndoor making the most of this technology?
We are so proud of our ongoing commitment to green energy, reducing our carbon footprint and creating a sustainable and environmentally friendly business by rolling out PV solar panels across our sites amongst other green initiatives.
So far, we have successfully installed several PV solar systems across over half of our sites, including Bent Ley Industrial Estate, The Dyeworks, Meltham Mills, and Big Valley. We believe that we have a responsibility to preserve and protect our planet, and we will be doing what we can to create more onsite renewable energy over the coming years. We like to be proactive in servicing and maintaining the solar PV systems to ensure they are always generating at maximum capacity.
The benefits for the environment, our planet and our health are huge:
- Widespread use of solar energy does not pollute the air
- Solar energy slows down climate change
- It reduces the carbon footprint and the dependence on fossil fuels
- Zero energy production costs
- Economic savings that can be passed on to our tenant community
- Saves water which is of global significance in cutting the waste of this precious natural resource
Dan Bamforth, Managing Director of Towndoor, says, ‘Here at Towndoor we are proud of our green credentials. We are keen to bring this to more of our sites in the future including the installation of more solar panels, allowing us to protect the environment, reduce our carbon footprint and enable us to pass on cheaper electricity to our valued tenants.”
We would love to hear your thoughts, suggestions, and ideas about the future for green energy, please drop us a line enquiries@towndoor.co.uk or give us a call, it would be great to hear from you!
